Yes, it really hurts children. I know some kids who started doubting themselves because of this kind of gossip and eventually left hockey completely.

I experienced something very similar myself. What upset me most was not only the behaviour itself, but the feeling that the responsibility to properly address and prevent it was not fully taken seriously. No child should feel unsafe, isolated, or targeted in what should be a positive team environment.
